Ingredients to make my Easy Blueberry Chia Jam

You will need 3 simple ingredients:

  • Blueberries – Fresh or frozen.
  • Chia seeds – to thicken the jam and boost nutrition!
  • Apple juice – liquid to help cook the blueberries and add sweetness.
  • Honey (optional for littles > 2 years old) – adjust sweetness as desired.
Blueberry Chia Jam Ingredients

Step by Step Instructions

  • Add blueberries and apple juice to a saucepan and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes, mashing with a fork or potato masher.
  • Turn off the heat, add the chia seeds and mix until thickened.
  • Add honey if desired (> 2 year olds).
  • Let it cool completely and transfer to a glass jar.
  • Refrigerate or freeze.

Storage Instructions

Normally you can preserve homemade jam for long periods of time if using the correct process for “canning”, which requires a certain range of pH which is normally achieved adding lemon juice and the correct sterilization of the glass jars. I have made this jam with lemon juice before, however, the results with apple juice are superior (from a sweetness stand point) and you won’t need to add any honey for little ones less than 2 years old.

So, this is considered a “quick jam” or “freezer jam” recipe and I recommend refrigerating for up to 1 week and freezing for up to 3 months.

I like using these small baby food storage jars from Elk and Friends as they are just the right portion size.

To defrost, place the glass jars inside another container with some water, loosen the lid and microwave until soft.

Serving suggestions & substitutions

We like serving this jam on toast, PB&J sandwiches, with pancakes or yogurt.

You can replace the apple juice for any other unsweetened fruit juice (grapes, orange) or even water.
