Oatmeal Lactation Cookie Recipe

Feeding a family is a never ending and exhausting task. Having to nourish myself postpartum on top of everything else going on is very challenging. Ever since I started making this lactation cookie recipe that I felt that I had a special treat to give myself when I felt low or craved something sweet. These oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are great cold with a cup of milk, coffee or tea. Enjoy!

How do Lactation Cookies Work?

Even though there are no guarantees that lactation cookies will increase breast milk supply, they “may help” and for me that’s worth a try!  Here is some additional tips on improving your milk supply.

Breastfeeding for me was never easy and when pregnant with my daughter I knew I could do something different nutritionally to try to boost my milk supply. So here I am researching which foods are best to help with milk production. Below is a summary list:

  • Oats: Some studies have shown that oats help with milk production due to its iron levels.
  • Brewer’s yeast: I had never heard of brewer’s yeast until this research. It is packed with vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium, and potassium and labeled to increase milk supply.
  • Flaxseed: Rich in omega 3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens that aid milk production.
  • Fennel and Fenugreek: Can be found in Mother’s milk tea.

I have used oats and brewer’s yeast in this recipe. If you would like to replace eggs with flaxseed eggs, simply mix 2 tbsp ground flaxseeds with 1/3 cup water and let it gel before adding to this recipe.

Step by Step Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350F.
  • In a medium bowl, mix dry ingredients: quick oats, oat flour, brewer’s yeast, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add butter, eggs, coconut sugar and vanilla extract. Use an electric hand mixer to blend or a whisk.
  • Add dry ingredients to the bowl and combine with wet ingredients.
  • Gently stir in chocolate chips (or raisings).
  • Shape the cookies using a spoon or cookie scoop. Place them about 2 inches apart as they will spread while baking. Press each cookie with a spoon or fork.
  • Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and let cookies cool down to firm up.

Recipe Tips

  • Quick oats: If you don’t have quick oats, you can quickly process old fashioned oats in a food processor for 15-20 seconds.
  • Oat flour: If you don’t have oat flour, you can process old fashioned oats in a food processor until they become a fine powder.
  • Once the cookies are removed from the oven they will be soft, do not move them until they firm up a bit. Then you can let them cool on a wire rack if desired.

Storage Instructions

You can store these lactation cookies in the fridge or at room temperature for 3-5 days. I bet they won’t last this long!
