INGREDIENTS TO MAKE THE BEST BAKED SWEET POTATO FRIES
To make these super tasty homemade baked sweet potato fries, you need:
- Sweet Potatoes: Peeled. This recipe will work with regular potatoes as well.
- Olive oil: My preferred choice, but any cooking oil will work.
- Cornstarch: The secret ingredient that will help the potatoes hold their shape and achieve a light crisp outside.
- Garlic powder: For flavor, you can substitute onion powder.
- Paprika: I like to use smoked paprika, but regular or sweet tastes amazing!
- Parsley Flakes: I like parsley, but you can sub for oregano or Italian seasoning.
- Sea salt: Omit for babies < 12 months old.
PROCESS & COOKING TIPS
- Peel and cut your fries evenly about ¼ inch wide.
- Soak the fries in cold water for 30 minutes.
- While you wait, preheat the oven to 430F (220C).
- After 30 minutes, rinse, drain, and pat dry the potatoes using a clean towel.
- In a bowl, add the fries and the olive oil. Mix very well until all the fries are evenly coated.
- Pre-mix all the dry seasoning and cornstarch.
- Add the dry mixture to the fries and mix well.
- Transfer to a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and spread the fries (make sure not to overload).
- Bake for about 35 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Remove from oven and then add salt to taste (omit for babies <12m old).
- Let the baked sweet potato fries cool a bit, and serve!
Tips for the Best Results
- Soaking the peeled, washed, and cut fries in cold water for at least 30 minutes (more will be even best) removes excess potato starch and helps them to get nice and crispier (but not as crisp as fried potatoes). This step will also prevent the potatoes from browning too fast when cooking.
- Cornstarch is a key ingredient for the fries to hold their shape for baby-led weaning.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
These fries are best when consumed immediately. But you can store in the fridge and reheat in the air fryer or microwave.
