Reasons to love these Strawberry Cream Cheese Danishes

  • Quick and simple to make: With minimum ingredients, these can be ready in less than 30 minutes.
  • Healthier than most sweet pastries you can buy: I use honey to sweeten, good quality cream cheese with only 2 ingredients and fruit. Most store-bought Danish pastries use sugar and chemical preservatives.
  • Fun to make: You can get creative and use different cookie cutters and enjoy a variety of flavors such as blueberry or peach.

Ingredients

  • Puff pastry
  • Cream cheese or mascarpone: Use a full fat cream. My favorite is Philadelphia cream cheese.
  • Honey: Any type will work, or sub for maple syrup.
  • Fresh strawberries: Cut them into thin slices and decorate. Frozen will not work!
  • Milk: Used to brush the top of the pastries before baking.

Step by Step Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 F, according to puff pastry’s instructions.
  • Roll out puff pastry and use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut the pieces.
  • Place a smaller sized heart shaped cookie cutter and press down gently to make an indentation to the pastry.
  • In a bowl, mix the cream cheese with honey.
  • Place the mixture into a piping bag or use a spoon to spread it to the inner heart.
  • Top with strawberries.
  • Brush some milk over the edges of the pastry.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Let them cool a bit and serve.

Cooking tips

  • Do not overfill the pastries: Be very careful to put only a small amount of cream cheese filling or it will melt and drip out the sides. The amount in this recipe is ideal to fill 12 medium sized hearts.
  • These Danishes can burn quickly after being “done”. Make sure to follow puff pastry’s instructions for baking time and keep an eye out not to burn them.
  • Brush with milk: Make sure to brush the edges of the pastry with milk before baking. There is no need to use eggs, only milk is sufficient.
  • Use cold cream cheese: Keep it in the fridge until ready to mix with honey and use. Some recipes also suggest that a little bit of flour is used in the cream cheese mixture to avoid it from dripping, however I find this not necessary. AS long as you do not overfill the Danishes you will be fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cream cheese Danishes need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Once cooled, leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

What is Danish filling made of?

Store bought Danishes are made of cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and vanilla extract. My healthier homemade version uses only cream cheese, honey and fruit.
